“In our group, we started with personal savings where each member contributes Ksh40 per week totalling Ksh160 per month. Kenya Red Cross trained us on financial management through which we opened an account with Equity Bank,” explains Salim Masha, a member of the Bongo Ngombato Youth Group.
“As a group, we had a lot of business idea but we settled on agribusiness”, continues Salim. “We approached a group member whose family has a big chunk of land and they agree to lease it to us for our business venture. Our plan is to grow sweet potatoes, water melon and okra. We would harvest okra after three months and sell as we wait for sweet potatoes which we would harvest after six months.”
Youth Groups are supported by the Conflict Prevention, Peace and Economic Opportunities for the Youth project implemented by the Kenya Red Cross Society and financed by the EU Trust Fund for Africa. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to increased peace, stability and inclusive economic opportunities for youth in marginalised areas in Kenya.
