On Friday November 28 2019, farmer and herder groups in Bole Community signed a peace agreement to end perennial incidents of violent conflicts that undermined peace, security and economic opportunities in the area.
The agreement was signed in the presence of the Village head of Bole, the district head of Yola South and the Ubandoma of Adamawa Emirate.
The process was led by Murmushi People’s Development Foundation, which had received grant and capacity building support from the EUTF funded Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN) Programme to facilitate the peace process.
The dialogue and mediation initiative commenced in 2018 with separate consultations with the farmers and herders to secure their consent for the mediation process.
This was followed by engagements to find out the grievances of the competing groups.
The farmers and herders were brought together to present their concerns, demands and commitments.
Both parties agreed to terms of resource exploitation that will foster peaceful existence and secured livelihoods for all.
These include agreements: to redraw the grazing routes to avert encroachments; to prohibit grazing at night; prohibit grazing by underaged persons; to prohibit grazing on farmlands; ensure prompt payment of compensation for damaged crops and livestock stolen or killed.
In-grouping policing mechanisms were also put in place to monitor compliance.
The signing agreement held months after commencement of the monitoring process and feedback that growing compliance to the agreement is contributing to conflict prevention and enhanced security.
