Better Migration Management (BMM) programme supports South Sudan in potential accession to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC)

HoA-SS-bridge

The Better Migration Management (BMM) Programme organized an event with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Government of South Sudan to discuss the countries potential for accession to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). BMM invited Ministers and officials from the Interior, Justice, Health, National Security, Prime Minister, and Presidential offices as well as relevant civil society organization representatives to participate.

Discussions focused on the process of accession, the requirements that must be met and the path to achieving them. The event consisted of several workshops and discussions to outline policy solutions.
Participants discussed several case studies on international cooperation with relevant UN protocol in the context of South Sudan’s experiences on the subject. Workshops then centred on developing comprehensive migration management policy recommendations and a road map for regional and migration route country cooperation.

About the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC):
The United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, adopted by General Assembly resolution 55/25 of 15 November 2000, is the main international instrument in the fight against transnational organized crime. It opened for signature by Member States at a High-level Political Conference convened for that purpose in Palermo, Italy, on 12-15 December 2000 and entered into force on 29 September 2003.

Sates that ratify the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) commit themselves to taking a series of measures against transnational organized crime, including the creation of domestic criminal offences (participation in an organized criminal group, money laundering, corruption and obstruction of justice); the adoption of new and sweeping frameworks for extradition, mutual legal assistance and law enforcement cooperation; and the promotion of training and technical assistance for building or upgrading the necessary capacity of national authorities.
