Kenya has been operating a successful National Coordination Mechanism (NCM) system since July 2016 and it is considered among the best in the Horn of Africa and East Africa as a whole. Hence, the Sudanese government, as part of its process of establishing its own NCM, visited Kenya to draw best practices from the field and build a roadmap to set up a similar coordination mechanism in Sudan. This study tour was facilitated under the Better Migration Management Programme (BMM) the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The NCM aims to facilitate an orderly, safe, and regular migration on national level. Additionally, it shall strengthen coordination among multiple key actors at the national and regional level. For example, an enhanced migration management allows for a better referral of migrants to adequate services like medical or legal support. During the visit, Sudanese officials from the relevant ministries followed an operation of the Kenyan National Coordination Mechanism in Namanga, at the border with Tanzania.

The establishment of NCMs has been supported at the regional level under the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in an effort to address migration-related challenges through improved national migration policies and governance systems. In synergy with it, the BMM is providing further support to its institutional counterparts for the set-up and capacity development of the NCMs.
