The Erasmus+ programme actively contributes to improving the quality and international dimension of academic institutions in the region and supports the availability of qualified high-level professional youth in West Africa. The support provided by the EUTF for Africa to Erasmus+ in 2017 led to a significant increase in the number of student and university staff exchanges between Europe and 12 West African countries. In total, 88 project partnerships between European universities and universities in the region were targeted in 2018 leading to 1,005 academic exchanges.
The Erasmus+ in West Africa programme originally approved in December 2017, has been reinforced in December 2018 with an additional support of 6 million euros for the Sahel and Lake Chad region. This complementary action will build on existing practices and mechanisms under Erasmus+ and enlarge its geographical scope to the Horn of Africa with an additional 4 million euros.
