HoA- KE- MLS case study

How can economic opportunities for the youth contribute to conflict prevention? The innovative approach adopted by the EUTF-funded programme 'Conflict Prevention, Peace and Economic Opportunities for the Youth' in Kenya suggests that an answer may lie in addressing various conflict drivers simultaneously. The MLS case study investigates how three organisations (GIZ, Kenya Red Cross Society and RUSI) bring their respective strengths to a consortium with the ambitious task of discouraging youth from engaging in violence and/or joining gangs or violent extremist groups. It summarises what existing research has shown regarding the link between economic opportunities and violence, and complements it with the voices of some Kenyan youth benefiting from the programme activities. The case study also highlights lessons learned to better take advantage of the consortium structure for future programming.
