New results published: 1,5 million people have received nutrition assistance and more than 28.400 jobs have been created in the Sahel and Lake Chad region

The latest report on results achieved through the projects implemented by the Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) shows that, since the beginning of the implementation of the EUTF, 1.5 million people have received nutrition assistance and more than 28.400 jobs have been created in the Sahel and Lake Chad region. Moreover, around 77.000 returning migrants have benefitted from reintegration assistance and more than 850.000 participated in conflict prevention and peace building activities.

Quarterly results mentioned below refer to the period of July – September 2019.

Greater economic and employment opportunities

In third quarter of 2019 only, 2,334 jobs have been created – this represents a 9% increase compared to the total achieved up to June 2019. 52.340 people have been supported to delevop income-generating activities, with a net growth of 19% compared to the previous semester, and 52.340 people benefitted from professional training. In the third semster of 2019, 846 MSMEs were created or supported thanks to EUTF funded programmes.

Strengthening resilience of communities

Significant progress were achieved in the third quarter of 2019. As of September 2019, 364,951 people received food-security assistance, mostly in Niger, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. 1,004,493 individuals were reached by information campaigns on resilience building practices and basic rights, which represents an increase of 26% compared to the results of the previous semester, mostly concentrated in Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cameroon. 35,376 staff from local authorities and basic service providers benefited from capacity building to strengthen service delivery, with major increases in Guinea, Mali and Mauritania.

Improved migration management

During the third quarter of 2019, almost 141,400 new migrants or potential migrants were reached by information campaigns on migration and on the risks linked to irregular migration, showing a 27% increase compared to the results up to June 2019. Noteworthy progress was also achieved on returns and reintegration assistance: almost 6000 humanitarian repatriations were supported, and 6,237 returnees benefited from reintegration assistance. Furthermore, 2,009 people, all of whom asylum seekers and refugees, were protected and/or assisted, a 40% increase from June 2019, according to the results provided by the International Organisation on Migration (IOM).

Improved governance and conflict prevention

The most significant change on improved governance in the third quarter of 2019 pertain to the number of laws and plans supported, which showed a 21% increase compared to the previous period, bringing the total number of laws and plans supported to 821. The number of staff trained and the number of institutions benefiting from capacity building and operational support on governance and conflict prevention both showed an increase of 13% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2019.
