Enhancing self-reliance for refugees and host communities in Kenya

The aim of this project is to enhance the self-reliance of refugees and host communities in Kenya.

In December 2019, a top-up of €7.6 million was approved in order to extend the support to the Kalobeyei Integrated Social and Economic Development Plan (KISEDP), by piloting the insertion of refugees in the national medical health coverage system in Kakuma and Kalobeyei and building much needed infrastructure, including schools and boarding facilities and transport linkages. It will also support the development of an integrated health facility of the Dadaab refugee camp that will service both refugees and host populations.

In order to support increased food security via the World Food Programme’s (WFP) presence in the Kalobeyei settlement in Kenya, a top-up of €5 million was approved in October 2021. These additional funds will not only ensure WFP’s unrestricted cash transfers for an additional 4.5 months, but also extend the current support to programmes related to school feeding and nutrition prevention. This top-up will further complement the self-reliance-oriented activities in the Kalobeyei settlement.

In December 2021, the action received a top-up of €2.8 million to contribute to the further implementation of the KISEDP for refugees and host communities in Turkana County.

Main objectives

The specific objectives are:
1. Enhance the Government of Kenya's overall asylum management and support government-led CRRF roll-out at both national and county levels.
2. Contribute to the implementation of the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Programme (KISEDP) for refugees and host communities in Turkana County.
3. Improve economic self-reliance of refugees and host communities in Garissa County.
