Tripoli, 22, October 2018 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has renovated Golden Clinic (Polyclinic compound) in Sebha as part of the European Union (EU) funded project ‘Strengthening Local Capacities for Resilience and Recovery.’ Today, UNDP handed it over to Sebha Municipal Council.

The Golden Clinic, previously known as Al Gurda Polyclinic, is considered the second biggest health facility in Sebha. It used to attend 8,000 patients per month. The building was severely damaged during the conflict in 2014. Heavy artillery destroyed the facility and reduced it to the minimum of its capacity to provide health services. The clinic was only working half day per week until 2017, when it finally started operating daily. However, only one floor could receive patients. With this rehabilitation, the clinic will attend patients also in the second floor dedicated to obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and blood laboratory among other specialties.

More than 100 people, including representatives from the Sebha Municipal Council, the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Health, and Sebha University, attended the handover ceremony.

On behalf of Mr. Hamed Alkhialy, the Mayor of Sebha, the Under Secretary of Sebha Municipal Council, Mr. Mohamed Khalifa said: “Improving the health sector in Sebha is a priority for our citizens and for the municipality. Thanks to the EU, UNDP and the Ministry of Local Governance for their commitment to improve basic service in Sebha. The quality of the work is commendable.“

According to the Golden Clinic Manager, Mr. Emhemad Abu Adba, the rehabilitation will serve 96,000 people annually. He stated: “Health services had been suspended in Sebha for many years, today we are able to provide healthcare to our citizens again.”

The project is also supporting Sebha’s Water and Sanitation company with the design of the main sewage pipeline and the upcoming delivery of three generators. Furthermore, the project is building the first public park in Sebha.

Aimed at supporting access to basic services, community security and economic recovery in Libya, the EU-funded project is being implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Local Governance in Tripoli, Sabratha, Sebha, Murzuq, Benghazi and AlKufra municipalities.
