Following the return to democracy and the inauguration of President Barrow in January 2017, the EU stepped up its support to the New Gambia. In complementarity with the other development instruments of the EU, the EU Emergency Trust Fund, has adopted a two-fold approach to migration, where prevention - through awareness-raising in order to better inform about the risks of irregular migration - is completed by migrant protection, including return and reintegration facilitation and institutional capacity building for migration management. In parallel, the Trust Fund is targeting the root causes of irregular migration through the development of employment opportunities for the youth.
